Mick Fanning is the 2007 Foster’s ASP World Tour Champion -ozzy go- aspworldtour.com
Imbituba, Brazil, Tuesday, November 6, 2007
Australian Mick Fanning clinched his maiden Foster’s ASP World
Title after winning the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro in Brazil
today. Fanning was in the water about to surf a semifinal heat
against childhood friend Joel Parkinson (AUS) when Taj Burrow
(AUS) was eliminated by Tom Whitaker (AUS) and his lifelong
dream was realized.
“I woke up this morning and I just had a good feeling that it was
going to happen today,” Fanning said. “It was so amazing to be
out there with Joel. When I realized I’d won I went, ‘What do we
do Joel?’ and he was like, ‘I don’t know!’ I was just so stoked to
share my first ever heat as the World Champion with him. It was
amazing.”
Fanning surfed a signature heat to beat Parkinson 18.70 to 12.84
in Semifinal 1 before defending his Brazilian title by beating
rookie Kai Otton (AUS) in the final to win the Hang Loose Santa
Catarina Pro. The win marks his 9th Foster’s ASP World Tour
event win. full story on aspworldtour.com pics from

Massive Chopes! Interview With Raimana Van Bastolaer
We all saw the massive purple and red blob headed straight for
Tahiti earlier in the week. Initial reports were calling it upwards of
a twenty-foot swell.
Yeah, right. Heard it all before.
Then I got an email from a friend who said the swell had been
downgraded a bit. He was dead wrong. This swell hit hard, really
hard, like biggest swell of the year hard. And right when I began
wondering when and where the photos would show up, my email
inbox flashed “TAHITI, THURSDAY NOV 1”
After gasping at the photos I rang our bro in Tahiti, Raimana Van

Slater Wins Boost Mobile Pro and Breaks World Record -ozzy go- boostmobilepro.com
LOWER TRESTLES, California – Reigning and 8X Foster’s ASP
World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) has won his first event in over
a year, moved to current World No. 2, and broke a world record
after beating Pancho Sullivan (HAW) in the Final of the 2007 Boost
Mobile Pro presented by Hurley today.
“It’ll be nice to go and sit down and think about this one,” Slater
said. “This will be a neat little tournament for my career. I’m a
little bummed because I didn’t feel like I capitalized on the waves
I had, and it was frustrating, but just to get that win was
important. We had similar conditions to 1990 when I won out
here, so it was pretty magical.”
The victory marks Slater’s 34th ASP World Tour win and earns
him the record for the most elite tour event victories in history.
Former three-time ASP World Champion Tom Curren (USA) set
the record with his 33rd event win 16 years ago. Slater tied
Curren with his 2006 Bells Beach victory and, despite featuring in
four finals in the 16 months since, hadn’t broken the record until
today.“Part of me is kind of sad,” Slater said. “I was hoping Tom and I
would end up on the same number forever, but somebody is
bound to come along and get to where I got. You’ve got to surf to
the standards, but someone else is always going to be coming
along that has the time and desire.”
Slater has been in the last four Boost Mobile Pro finals. He
finished runner-up in 2004 and 2006, and claimed wins in 2007
and in 2005. His win today puts him 230 points behind Foster’s
ASP ratings leader Mick Fanning (AUS) and has positioned him as
a strong contender for the 2007 World Title.
“Now I’ve almost got as many points as I had accrued last year,”
Slater said. “I didn’t think I was that intensely focused this week,
I felt calm and happy. We’ll see what happens in France. After
this I could really capitalize on everything.”
Sullivan, who is into his sophomore year on tour, posted his best
result to date with his runner-up finish to Slater. The powerful
Hawaiian was a standout performer on the final day of
competition, besting Neco Padaratz... full story here

Gary Elkerton launching big wave event, the Mt Woodgee Challenge in New Zealand -ozzy go-
Catching the biggest wave in the world is one thing. Facing drowning, freezing
to death and being eaten by a great white shark is another. Michael Donaldson
reports on New Zealand's first big wave surfing challenge.
Gary Elkerton is not kidding when he says "people can die doing this". He's so
not kidding he repeats the line a little later. And not just any death. The choices
are drowning, freezing to death and being eaten by a great white shark.
But Elkerton aims to ensure nothing like this is going to happen when he
organises New Zealand's first big wave surfing challenge, known as the
Mt Woodgee Challenge, on the south coast of the South Island.
His offsider, Bede Durbidge, one of the best surfers in the world, doesn't seem
too fazed by the concept of big waves and big sharks. It's the freezing to death
thing that seems to have him concerned. After all, he is from Queensland and
the thought of donning a super-thick wetsuit, hood, gloves and booties and
crossing a snow-covered beach to get in the water is enough to make him think
twice about this business.
You can almost hear him asking why New Zealand's biggest wave has to be on
the south of Dunedin. Why can't it be in Raglan or Gisborne? The reason is weather.
"There are five or six places that have the biggest waves in the world," Elkerton
explains. "In the South Island there exists a wave that could be the biggest in
the world. We know there are waves in the 30ft (10m) to 50ft foot (16m) range-
we're shooting for the 50-footer."
Brewed in the Antarctic, these waves hit a reef off the Catlins coast in winter.
Over the next few months, Elkerton is aiming to pinpoint the arrival of the really
big waves, at which point he'll bring together the bravest and maddest surfers
in New Zealand and Australia for a competition, in which riders are towed on to
the wave by jetskis.
"We know these waves are there and using weather patterns and other
observations you can predict when they'll arrive. We could get the biggest
wave in the world."
And the competition will have an added quirk. The competitors will judge
themselves and decide by consensus which amongst them has ridden the
biggest wave. The entire event will be captured on digital video and
broadcast on the internet at mtwoodgee. co.nz.
