Broc Hepler on Vital Buzz
Short of an ill-timed slide on the inside of a 180-
degree corner while in the lead, Broc Hepler might
have been the winner of the Lites class main event
on Saturday night. Early in the main, Broc and Ryan
Dungey had gotten into a tactical duel in the same
corner, taking turns diving for the inside. Broc had
run around the inside of the corner on several
successive laps, but got a little too generous with
the throttle and slid out, handing the lead to Jake
Weimer. Broc spent the pre-season working with

Brett Metcalfe Places 3rd In An Exciting Phoenix SX Lites Main Event
CORONA, Calif., (Jan. 14, 2008) – – Monster Energy/Pro
Circuit/Kawasaki’s Brett Metcalfe wound up on the podium of one of
the more exciting AMA Supercross Lites class races in recent years,
scoring a 3rd place finish on his Kawasaki KX250F at Saturday’s
Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, at
Phoenix’s Chase Field.
Metcalfe, who pulled a powerful start (4th), got hooked up in a train of
six racers – any of whom could have won on Saturday. He moved into
podium position on lap 11, then was able to fight off a feverous charge
from a number of riders to hold that position through the checkers –
his first podium finish of the 2008 Monster Energy Supercross season.
“It was one of those tracks where you had to focus and stay on it
because there was five to six guys in there,” said Metcalfe. “It was a
lot of fun and to end up on the podium made it awesome.”
Metcalfe, who finished out of the top ten in the first Lites class race of
the season (Anaheim 1), hopes his effort at Phoenix will set him on
course for a Eastern Region Monster Energy Supercross championship
bid come Seattle (April 26th).
“I think every Lites class race is going to be like that from here on
out,” he said. “So it’s going to be important for myself to get good
starts, ride smart and attack the track.”
Metcalfe’s teammate, Austin Stroupe (5th @ Anaheim 1), did not
qualify for the Lites main event.
Next up for the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team is Round

A lot has been said over the past couple weeks from
James Stewart’s “doubters.” While it’s hard to imagine
anyone doubting a guy who won 13 of 16 AMA
Supercrosses just last year on his way to the title, if
they do exist, they’re surely not doubting him any
longer, as the defending champ just led every lap of
the Phoenix Supercross, pulling even with round-one
winner Chad Reed in the 2008 Monster Energy
Supercross Championship chase in the process. We
missed James after the race (hey, I’m the new guy)
but tracked him down Monday evening to find out how

Metcalfe puts Pro Circuit on podium
Sun Valley, ID – Brett Metcalfe, who spent all of last year’s
SX season on the sidelines with an injury, placed third in
the Lites SX race at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix, AZ this
past Saturday. Riding smooth and putting in consistent laps,
Metcalfe kept himself in striking position throughout the
race. When leader Broc Hepler made a mistake, Metcalfe
was able to move up to take third. Metcalfe’s third was the
first podium of the year for the usually dominate.
The series moves to Anaheim stadium for this Saturday’s
“Throwback” race, featuring a replica of the 1986 Anaheim
track where David Bailey and Rick Johnson battled in what
many describe as the best SX race ever. pic from

KTM Race Report: Phoenix Supercross class
Round two of the AMA Supercross FIM Championship held
at Chase Field in Phoenix, AZ brought a nearly sold out
crowd and perfect temperatures.
MDK KTM Factory rider, Nick Wey, was in Heat #2 of the
Supercross class. He got a good jump but was pushed out
causing him to come around the first turn in last position.
He charged his way up trying to pass where he could on
the fast track. By the eighth and final lap he had moved
into 10th just one spot shy of qualifying. Forced to go to the
last chance, Wey, nailed the holeshot and lead the race
from start to finish earning a spot in the main.
In the Supercross class main, Wey had a poor gate pick
and had to choose an outside line. As the riders took off he
was pushed way out and replayed the last place start he
had earlier in his Heat. He rode hard and stayed strong
trying to move up on the pack. By lap four he had passed a
few riders and was riding in 16th. The track was fast and
each rider was giving it his all. Wey spent the majority of
the moto battling with Davi Millsaps as they continued to
pass back and forth. At the end of the race, Wey had
closed in on the pack ahead of him but was not able to

Monday Conversation: Jake Weimer January 14, 2008
Torco Racing Fuels Honda’s Jake Weimer got his break riding
for the team as a rookie a couple years ago, and at the time,
he was kind of a team project. They knew he had potential, and
they hoped they would be able to help bring it out of him. Since
then, he has seen steady and constant improvement. Last
October, he won the main event on night two of the U.S. Open,
but doubters were quick to point out that he did so because the
top five from the previous night were on the ground off the
start. However, last Saturday night, Weimer shut the doubters
up by not only winning his first ever AMA Supercross Lites main
event, but winning one of the most action-packed main events
in recent history, fighting off phenom Ryan Dungey to grab the
checkered flag. We caught up with him after the race, and it

Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Dungey Cards Podium Finish in Phoenix SX Lites Race
Rockstar Makita Suzuki Factory Racing’s Ryan Dungey brought
home an impressive second-place finish in the exciting Supercross
Lites race on Saturday night at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.
After winning the season-opening Anaheim round last week,
Dungey followed that up by winning his sixlap qualifying race. In
the Lites main, he got a great start on his Rockstar Makita Suzuki
RM-Z250 and led a number of the race’s 15 laps before finishing
in second place. With this finish, 18-year-old Dungey continues to
lead the Lites class championship points chase.
In the Supercross class, Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Mike Alessi got
a great start on his Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450, taking the
holeshot in the main. Unfortunately, shortly thereafter, the 19-
year-old rider hit a Tuffblock and rode several laps with a banner
attached to his bike. In spite of this, Alessi continued to charge
hard in the 20-lap main event, and brought home a sixth-place
finish. Teammate David Vuillemin struggled a bit in the Supercross
main but still managed to capture as many points as possible.
Ryan Dungey: “I was happy with practice today, I was about a
half-second faster than everybody else. I felt good in the races,
too, though I had a hard time putting the track together. It got
really slick, but I did my best to try and make it work. I made a
couple of mistakes, and I think those kept me from winning. But
I’m going to work on that and try to not make those mistakes
again. The race itself was a great show and it was good to give
the fans such an exciting race. It was a dogfight, we were back
and forth and everybody was going at it. Overall, it was good to
walk away with the points lead. Now, we’ll just take it one race at
a time and come back stronger next week.”
Mike Alessi: “The day started out pretty good -- the Suzuki RM-
Z450 was working great, the Bridgestone tires were hooking up, I
felt good and had a good flow. I was pretty happy with the first
practice but in the second practice, I hit a hay bale and did a big
endo, taking a handlebar to the thigh. It hurt pretty bad so then I
just tried to survive the rest of the session. I had a good heat
race, finishing fourth, but the main was awesome. I got the
holeshot, and ended up running third for a few laps. Then, I hit
that same Tuffblock I hit in practice and gave up a lot of spots. I
ended up in seventh, made it into sixthand was just inching up on
fifth, but couldn’t do it in time. Now, I’m just looking for a top-five
finish next week or maybe a podium.” full story on

Red Riders Race Report: Phoneix Supercross -ozzy go-
After the mud, sweat and cheers of Anaheim 1, the fast, dry
Phoenix Supercross track was something completely different.
And from the action on the track, both the riders and the crowd
approved.
It was also a standout performance from the Honda Red Bull
Racing team and Honda Torco Racing Fuels team. Kevin
Windham nailed down a spot on the podium with Andrew Short
and Ivan Tedesco following in fourth and fifth-places in the
Supercross main event. And young Jake Weimer did even
better, breaking through on his CRF250R to take his first-ever
Supercross Lites win, holding off a last-lap charge and coming
home a well-deserved winner.

Honda Red Bull Racing riders Andrew Short and Ivan Tedesco
served notice of their speed and consistency early on, taking
third and fifth in their heat race. CRF450R-mounted privateer
Heath Voss also advanced straight to the main with a strong
eighth, as did fellow Honda pilot Paul Carpenter in ninth.
The Heat Race 2 saw Honda Red Bull Racing’s Davi Millsaps ride
his CRF450R to an emphatic third place, with Kevin Windham,
the Pirate of the Coliseum, captaining his Honda Torco Racing
Fuels CRF450R to fifth. Bryan Johnson (eighth) and Antonio Balbi
(ninth) also took their Hondas directly into the main event.
When it came time for the Main, Davi Millsaps used the power
and agility of his CRF450R to nail down fourth place off the line,
but a miscue on the second lap sent him back in the pack. Kevin
Windham, however, was carving through the field and heading
for the front from his eighth-place start, taking fourth by the
second lap and third by lap three. In similar fashion, Honda Red
Bull Racing newcomer Ivan Tedesco and his teammate Andrew
Short advanced to fourth and fifth in the early going, the three
Hondas circulating in a virtual Red Tide of roost.
Up at the front, James Stewart was trading places with Anaheim
1 winner Chad Reed: Reed made Stewart work for every tenth
of a second, but Stewart eventually let him put a couple seconds
on the Australian. 
Andrew Short had been hounding Tedesco for fourth in the early
laps, clearly dissatisfied with fifth place: after a few laps of good,
clean, side-by-side racing, he finally edged ahead of Ivan.
Windham cruised just a few bike lengths ahead of the
Short/Tedesco battle, eventually bringing his Honda Torco Racing
Fuels CRF450R home to an impressive podium spot, cementing
his third-place ranking in the season’s points with yet another
inspiring performance. Short’s fourth-place finish at Phoenix put
him in fifth place in season points, with Ivan Tedesco eighth and
Davi Millsaps in ninth.
With his strong finish in Phoenix and the season still young,
Windham was ecstatic to take his first podium of the year.
“The Honda Torco Racing Fuels team had been working hard all
night to get me up here on the podium. I felt like I was close at
Anaheim 1, but I didn’t get it done [when] I went down in the
first corner. - “But I did it here tonight,” continued the veteran.
“I kinda felt like I’d been left out a little bit, I kinda had to get
myself back up here in the limelight. - “It feels good to keep us

Yamaha Race Report: Phoenix Supercross -ozzy go-

Chad Reed posted a close second-place finish to James Stewart
in front of 46,121 fans at round two of the 2008 AMA Supercross
Series in Phoenix, AZ on Saturday evening, January 12. With a
win and a second apiece, the pair now shares the points lead as
the season gets underway. In all, four of the top 10 finishers
were aboard Yamaha YZ450Fs, including L&M Racing teammates
Reed and Nathan Ramsey, and Joe Gibbs Racing’s Josh Hansen
and Charles Summey. In addition, Yamaha Factory Racing’s
Broc Hepler led the Supercross Lites class but ultimately ended
up fourth on his YZ250F, just ahead of Yamaha of Troy’s Jason
Lawrence.

After decisively taking the opening round in Anaheim, Reed was
primed and ready to win in Phoenix, and he showed both
motivation and speed by dominating his heat race after an early
battle with teammate Josh Hill. But when the gate dropped for
the 20-lap main event, Mike Alessi narrowly grabbed the
holeshot ahead of Stewart and Reed. The pair quickly dispatched
Alessi and forged a sizable lead, eventually lapping half the
field. Reed took control briefly on lap three, the pressured
Stewart throughout the race and ultimately finished a scant
1.966 sec. behind the defending series champion.
“I really wanted to put this win in my trophy cabinet,” Reed
admitted afterwards. “But it was a good weekend and a good
battle, and I’m super motivated for next week!”
Supercross Lites
The 15-lap Supercross Lites race turned into a terrific five-man
battle for the win with YZ-mounted Hepler and rivals Ryan
Dungey and Jake Weimer all trading the lead, and Brett Metcalfe
and Yamaha pilot Lawrence also in the mix. In fact Hepler
looked like a sure winner aboard his YZ, leading twice until a
mistake dropped him to fourth place. The final podium went to
Weimer, Dungey and Metcalfe, with Yamaha pilots Hepler and
Lawrence in fourth and fifth, respectively.
“It’s nice to see Jason improving and Broc leading a few laps,
and I’m looking forward to more of it as the season goes on,”
said Yamaha Supercross team manager Jim Perry.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Rider James Stewart Becomes a Phoenix Favorite with Win
PHOENIX -–Monster Energy Kawasaki rider James Stewart took the win
and a share of the points lead during the second round of the Monster
Energy® AMA Supercross, an FIM Championship with an impressive
victory at Chase Field.
After a clean start, Stewart ran a smooth race, leading all 20 laps of the
main event to put his Kawasaki KX™450F on the top step of the podium
for the first time this season. His teammate Timmy Ferry didn’t fare as
well, a rider knocked one of the safety blocks on the track in front of him,
leaving Ferry with no place to go. The veteran recovered to finish 10th.
The Western Regional AMA Supercross Lites race was an action filled
event with the top five riders trading positions throughout the feature.
One of the riders involved in the thrilling duel was Monster Energy/Pro
Circuit/Kawasaki rider Brett Metcalfe who finished on the podium in third.

Stewart’s wire-to-wire victory was his 25th career supercross win and
though he was challenged early, he was able to pull out to a comfortable
lead later in the race. The win comes on the heels of Stewart running a
tactical race in the season opener after being hit from behind in the first
corner.
“I had a good start and we made it past where we did last weekend so
that was a plus,” said Stewart. “I was definitely pumped going into that
first corner and I knew I didn’t want to tip over. I knew Chad (Reed) was
going to make a charge, that’s what he does and I just let the race come
to me. I think he almost made a pass on me, but I wasn’t too worried, it
is a long race and a long season and we have to be smart about it. I rode
as hard as the track would let me. Every race, every lap it gets tougher
and tougher, but I’m not worried about my endurance. I feel good, I’m
super stoked. I’m happy for everybody at Monster Energy Kawasaki,
this is our first win for Kawasaki in a while and for me it is satisfying. It’s
good to get a solid race under our belt and also a win, it definitely feels
good.”
The layout of the Chase Field track allowed the riders to choose one of
two whoops sections on every lap. The outside line started with three
small jumps followed by the whoops section while the inside line was
just the opposite. It began with a whoops section and closed with three
jumps. During the first practice, the riders experimented with each line
but in the second session, nearly all of the riders stayed to the inside.
Stewart’s fast lap during both practices came by using the inside line
and during the race he continued to use the preferred line until he ran
into lapped traffic.
“With the little berm on the inside line it was definitely getting rough
going into it,” said Stewart. “The toughest part was when you get to
lappers. The outside was obviously slower and I have to thank Mikey
(Williamson) for the timely signal, because I went to the outside to get
around them and he may have got past me if I went to the outside
again.”
For Ferry, the race was more difficult as he got caught at the wrong
place at the wrong time on the opening lap. He was running fourth when
he hit a track block thrown out in front of him, but the veteran
recovered well to finish 10th.
“I think if I could have just moved over two feet or predicted the future,
I would have known what to do,” said Ferry. “I had a good start and was
running near the front when a guy in front of me hit a block and kicked
it out on the track. I didn’t have anywhere to go and I just went down.
