It was a battle to the finish at the final round of this year's AMA
Superbike Championship. The two-day Corona AMA Superbike
challenge rewarded fans with cool sunny weather, and hot racing action.
Going into this weekend's final round, only three points separated
point's leader Mat Mladin from reigning champ and teammate
Yoshimura Suzuki's Ben Spies. With this weekends round only
being a two day event, Spies wasted no time when he hit the
track on Saturday. He qualified on pole with a new lap record of
1:23.105, pushing Mladin back to second position on Row 1 and
racking up an additional point to bring the gap between them
down to just two scant points. Honda's Jake Zemke, who is
currently unsigned for next year was looking for a good finish to
end a frustrating season and locked in on the third spot.
When the green flag dropped on Sunday's 28-lap grand finale it
was Mladin who rocketed to the front of the field with Honda's
Jake Zemke and teammate Spies in tow. Monster Energy
Kawasaki's Roger Lee Hayden's race ended almost as soon as it
started when the ZX-10R pilot took a tumble in Turn 3.
Meanwhile Spies quickly found his away past Zemke and began
going to work against his one and only true competition this year.
Mladin wasn't giving the Texan any ground though and put
together a string of 1:24 flat lap times. Monster Energy
Kawasaki's early Superbike race misfortune would be duplicated
by Jamie Hacking when he fell while chasing Zemke, moving
Jordan Suzuki's Aaron Yates into fourth position with Yamaha's
Eric Bostrom and MV August's Matt Lynn closely behind.
Spies looked good going into Turn 2 - backing in his GSX-R1000.
Mladin on the other hand had the flat and slow first gear Turn 11
dialed - the six-time champ consistently getting a fantastic drive
out of the corner and onto the short straight away. By lap 13, the
Yoshimura Suzuki duo had already started to mix with lapped
traffic, both getting by the first lappers cleanly without any
drama.
Three laps later though, it would be another lapped rider who got
in the way of Mladin while the two were entering the Corkscrew.
Spies saw the opportunity and jumped on it passing Mladin for the
lead. Spies continued to push hard, setting his fastest lap on his
18th go around the 2.2-mile long circuit. Mladin looked to be
riding hard but had nothing left to offer the 23-year-old Texan
and ended up crossing the checkered flag just over two seconds

Spies takes series finale to win AMA Superbike season title
MONTEREY, Calif. Ben Spies won the season-ending race Sunday
at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to successfully defend his AMA
Superbike championship.
Spies, the 23-year-old Suzuki rider from Longview, Texas, passed
teammate and series leader Mat Mladin on lap 16 of the 28-lap
final and pulled away to a 2.526-second victory. With his seventh
victory of the year, Spies edged Mladin by a point in the closest
finish since 1978, when the title was decided on a tiebreaker.
"That was the longest 12 laps I ever raced in my life,'' Spies said.
"The pass up in the corkscrew was a little tight, but we made and
kept the No. 1 plate. I think I proved to a lot of people today that
I don't buckle under pressure.''
Mladin said his tires let him down.
"I started sliding around about halfway through the race and
couldn't catch up,'' said Mladin, a six-time AMA Superbike
champion from Australia. "Congratulations to Ben. We'll come
back next year and try to get him again.''

This year's racing has been closer than ever in all AMA premier
racing series, both on dirt and on asphalt. Roadrace fans have
been treated to a battle royal in both AMA Superbike and the Pro
Honda Oils Supersport Championship presented by Shoei. The
entire six-month long season all comes down to Sunday's last
race, which will decide who will bring home the big championship
bonus in addition to the coveted Number-1 plate next year.
Yoshimura Suzuki teammates Ben Spies and Mat Mladin have
raced wheel to wheel all season long. Mladin and Spies have been
head and shoulders above the rest of the Superbike field - with
174 points separating the Yoshimura Suzuki duo from their closest
competitor, Honda's Jake Zemke. After teeter-tottering back and
forth in the point's battle, this year's championship all boils down
to one winner-take-all race at the picturesque Mazda Laguna Seca
Raceway in Monterey, California - a track that both riders know

Spies has been the model of consistency all year. The young
Texan has been on the podium all 10 rounds, finishing no worse

Mat Mladin’s clutch late-season four-race win streak has increased
the championship drama significantly as the ’07 season
approaches its conclusion. The six-time champ now trails
Yoshimura Suzuki teammate Ben Spies by just a slim six-point
margin with three races remaining.
Another dominating weekend from Mladin and the AMA Superbike
Championship could be set for a dream finale weekend for fans:
an all-out ‘winner take all’ scenario at Laguna Seca.
While Spies gets around the Road Atlanta circuit quite well,
boasting Superstock and Supersport wins in Georgia, Mladin has
to be regarded as the favorite this weekend. The Aussie is one
victory short of reaching the double-digit mark in victories at the
circuit and performing at the top of his game.
Should Mladin put together another perfect points haul weekend
(pole, twice leading the most laps, and winning both races), he’ll
actually be in command of the championship heading into Laguna
Seca, holding a five-point lead, meaning that Spies would need to
strike back with a perfect weekend of his own in California to
repeat as champ by a single point (note: Spies did put together a
perfect weekend during the season’s earlier trip to Monterey).
Should Spies step up and win his eighth pole in ten tries this
weekend only to see Mladin take the double win, Mladin would
hold a slim three-point advantage, meaning that the Laguna win
and either the laps led or pole point would win the title for Spies.
If Spies wins pole and one race (plus laps led), while Mladin
claims the other (plus laps led), the separation will be seven
points in Spies’ favor, meaning that Spies would only have to
finish second at Laguna Seca to hold on.
If Mladin and Spies somehow end the season tied in the points,
Mladin will be named AMA Superbike champion for the seventh
time, as his current mark of 10 wins in 2007 is unreachable by
Spies at this point, as he has six wins and only three races
remaining, guaranteeing the tiebreaker to his rival.
Obviously, the potential scenarios are virtually endless (including
the outside chance that someone other than Mladin or Spies
claims pole, leads the most laps, and finishes first or second), but

AMA Superbike win after taking the victory in Saturday's AMA
Superbike race at Virginia International Raceway in Alton,
Virginia.
Additionally, this is six-time AMA Superbike Champion Mladin's
ninth win of the 2007 season and his sixth victory at the circuit.
Yoshimura Suzuki team mate and defending AMA Superbike
Champion Ben Spies followed Mladin home in second place and
this impressive result leaves him in command of the AMA
Superbike championship points chase.
Rounding out the Yoshimura Suzuki team roster, former AMA
Supersport Champion Tommy Hayden finished up in ninth position
in the afternoon's race.

Yoshimura Suzuki’s Mat Mladin could reach a major milestone this
weekend when the AMA Superbike Championship presented by
Parts Unlimited comes to Virginia International Raceway (VIR) in
Alton, Va., on Aug. 17-19 for the AMA Suzuki Big Kahuna
Nationals. Mladin, the six-time AMA Superbike Champion from
Australia, has the opportunity to score his 60th-career AMA
Superbike victory.
Legendary Motorcycle Hall of Famer Fred Merkel set the standard
in the mid-1980s when he tallied 20 AMA Superbike victories. In
1998 Miguel Duhamel eclipsed Merkel’s mark to become the all-
time wins leader. In 2004 Mladin passed Duhamel to take over
the title of all-time AMA Superbike wins leader and in the last
three years Mladin has racked up an amazing 59 wins and now
sits on the verge of cracking the 60-win barrier.
Mladin closed to within 17 points of series leader and defending
champ Ben Spies with a double victory in the most recent rounds
at Mid-Ohio Sports Car. Even though the championship is very
much up for grabs as the series moves to VIR, Mladin says he’s
focused simply on winning races.
“Honestly I'm not thinking about the points,” Mladin said. “If I win
this championship, then we've done a really good job. We've
given a lot of points away this year. At Daytona, and Utah, I
made a silly mistake and crashed out of the lead. So we've given
up a few this year. So to be in the position we're in is very good,
anyway. To win the next five races would honestly mean a lot
more to me than winning the championship. To win 13 races in a
year, that'd be pretty cool. It'd be one of my better years, that's
for sure, that I've ever had, and being 35 and over the hill, not
too bad.”
If history is any indication the championship could draw even
tighter at VIR. Mladin has swept VIR’s Big Kahuna Doubleheader
the last two years and calls the Virginia circuit one of his
favorites.
Spies is still the series leader, but he realizes that his Yoshimura
Suzuki teammate is on a roll and he needs to step it up at VIR.
“It's going to be tough,” Spies said. “At Virginia last year before I
smashed my hand up, we had some pretty speed there. It's

Yoshimura Suzuki’s Mat Mladin proved without a shadow of a
doubt that the 2007 AMA Superbike Championship is far from
decided, striking back in response to rival Ben Spies' recent four-
race tear with a Mid-Ohio double victory of his own.
Mladin’s performance on Sunday evening was eerily similar to his
ride following the red flag on Saturday, as he once again got off
the line reasonably well in fourth before quickly battling up to
second by the conclusion of the opening lap, just under a second
off leader Spies.
As was the case Saturday, the six-time champ was clearly the
fastest man on the track, dipping down into the ‘24s despite the
fact that the track was lacking a bit of grip following a day of rain
and frantic and successful efforts by track officials to prepare the
surface in time to squeeze the race in on Sunday before nightfall
(the race didn’t get underway at 7:15 pm, forcing the day’s
support class races to be cancelled).
Mladin rapidly closed on the reigning series king but lost several
tenths after getting in too deep in the hard-braking Turn 6 on lap
3 of the abbreviated 18-lap affair. The former Cagiva Grand Prix

The Ben Spies/Mat Mladin AMA Superbike rivalry is the best in
the series in 20 years. Now the battle between the top two road
racers in the American championship will be shared by an
international crowd at The Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix, a combined
MotoGP and AMA Superbike Championship event held on July 20-
22, at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif.
Last year Spies, of Longview, Texas, ended the longtime
dominance of his Yoshimura Suzuki teammate Mladin by beating
the six-time AMA Superbike champion from Australia for the 2006
title. Mladin vowed to return strong this year, and good to his
word, the 35-year-old Mladin has given Spies, who turned 23 on
July 11, a serious run for his money.
Mladin had tire problems at the season opener in Daytona,
crashed and still finished 10th. The gritty Aussie fought back and
after winning three races in a row he drew into a tie with Spies in
the standings at mid-season. Spies responded and coming into
Laguna Seca has a three-race winning streak of his own, opening
an 18-point gap over Mladin after 11 of 19 rounds. A race win is
worth 36 points so an 18-point advantage means the two are
running nearly neck-and-neck with eight races remaining.
Spies is the defending winner at Laguna Seca and he is brimming
with confidence and ready to show the massive crowd and the GP
team managers at the Red Bull MotoGP/AMA weekend that he’s
ready to make the step to MotoGP racing if he decides to go that
direction in the future.
“I needed to step up my game to respond to Mat, who definitely
raised his level this year,” Spies said. “I got the momentum back
on my side, but I can’t rest. I want to go to Laguna and keep this
thing rolling. It’s going to be an important race and naturally you
want to show your best at the biggest race weekend we have in
this country.”
Mladin will be eager to bounce back strong after crashing in the
most recent round last month in Utah. To illustrate just how
determined Mladin is, he nearly pulled off a podium finish after
the crash. The race was red flagged and his team scrambled to
get his damaged Suzuki repaired for the restart. In spite of
suffering a violent high-side crash, Mladin was able to salvage
fourth place in the race to minimize the championship points
