Mark Burkhart passed defending champion Jeff Ward with 1 1/2
laps remaining in the Moto X supermoto final this afternoon and
pulled away for the victory at Home Depot Center.
Burkhart, a 27-year-old from Pataskala, Ohio, pulled alongside
Ward on the street portion of the course and then outraced him
on a straightaway to take the lead.
Ward, a 46-year-old from Newport Beach, then got out of sync
on a series of small dirt jumps inside the stadium and Burkhart
was able to extend his advantage.
"I tried not to go for the win at the start of the race and take
myself out,'' Burkhart said. "Be patient and patient people are
rewarded.''
Burkhart fell into third place after making a pit stop midway
through the 32-lap race. Ward then pitted two laps later, but
still got out a second ahead of Burkhart, who had worked his
way back into second.
Burkhart then stayed on Ward's fender for 13 laps before
making his move.
"I picked a couple places where I could make a move and it
worked out,'' he said. latimes.com
