Team Suzuki's Kevin Strijbos took his third win of the season
and Steve Ramon recovered from a pair of first lap crashes to
finish fifth and close to within 12 points of the FIM MX1 World
Championship lead at a cold, deep and rutted Moneyglass
Demesne circuit for the Grand Prix of Northern Ireland.
Surprisingly for a mid-August meeting the weather at the 13th
round of the MX1 World Championship was cold, rainy and
windy over the weekend. The new venue has been constructed
with a view towards the 2008 Motocross of Nations and although
Saturday's schedule was slashed to a single session due to
excessive rain and the debilitating effects on the track, Sunday
was dry but blustery and with low temperatures.
The downpours had made the soft terrain very soft and rough
and this presented problems for the many jumps. Naturally the
damp mud made mistakes commonplace.
Ramon was unlucky to fall on the opening lap of the first race
and the spill automatically meant that the 27 year old would
not be leaving Moneyglass as the new MX1 leader. The former
world champion recovered admirably to despatch a whole
gaggle of riders and reach eighth position, taking 13 points...
