The Toyota AMA National MX
Championship made its annual
pilgrimage to the Pacific Northwest
this weekend, which greeted our
"traveling circus" with cool,
overcast conditions. If you tuned
into the race action last weekend,
you'll know that this was a major
departure from the piping-hot
temperatures at round seven in
Colorado, where some riders were
forced to pull off after their fuel
began to boil! The Washougal staff
also made several changes to its
historic racetrack this year, the
most notable being the removal of
the infamous "Chuck Sun" jump
that led into the "Catcher's Mitt"
turn and on over to "Leech's
Lump" (where RC threw it away
last year). All three Washougal
landmarks are now gone, but the
good news for fans is that the
infield is much more open thanks
to the changes, making more room
for spectators (and vendors, of
course). Thankfully, the legendary
"Horsepower Hill" was left intact;
James Stewart and the rest of the
MX class were clocking speeds of
up to 56 mph by the time they
reached the top!
