Harris sizzles, Adams closes in, Crump back in town -ozzy go- fullnoise.com.au
An utterly stunning performance by Chris Harris has seen him
become the first native to win the British Speedway Grand Prix
at the Millennium Dome in Cardiff.
In a magnificent GP, held in front of a record crowd of 41,247,
24-year-old Harris masterfully nailed a dramatic, last-gasp win
in the final over American Greg Hancock, with Australians Jason
Crump and Leigh Adams finishing third and fourth.
The victory came in just Harris' fifth GP, making him the toast
of a nation which has failed to make an impression on the top
category of speedway since Mark Loram won the world title in
2000. "This was more than I dared dream about," said an
emotional Harris. "It still hasn't sunk in."
Harris is now the third local winner of the British GP behind
Loram (1999) and wildcard Martin Dugard in 2000.
Although Harris understandably stole the limelight in Cardiff, it
was also a profitable night for the Australian contingent, with
Adams drawing closer to Dane Nicki Pedersen in the battle for top
spot in the 11-round championship, while Crump's baffling run of
outs came to an end when he snared a place in the final.

Yep, it's time for spontaneous outbursts of "Reeeeeeedddddd
Buuuuuuuuuud! If you haven't been here, it's hard to describe
how enthusiastic the fans are, and how polished the track and
facility are. There's a new double that is turning into a virtual
playground for whips, much to many photographer's delight,
and we expect that tomorrow's racing will be stellar, as usual.
The bad news is that Ben Townley is doubtful for tomorrow due
to a flare-up with his appendix, and Ryan Dungey is definitely
out, after he crashed and was out long enough that the AMA red-
flagged the second Lites seeded practice until he could be taken
care of.
Once again, James Stewart sat out Saturday's practice sessions,
but he'll be in for Sunday. Check out the times below, to find out
who was fast on Saturday.
Carmichael and Villopoto Top Red Bud Qualifying, Stewart elects to sit out again - cyclenews
Ricky Carmichael was clearly in a class of his own during qualifying today, in preparation
for round five of the Toyota AMA Motocross Championship Series to be held tomorrow at
Red Bud Track N Trail near Buchanan, Michigan.
The Makita Suzuki rider logged a qualifying time of 2:31.269 (on the beautifully prepared
course), which was nearly three seconds faster than the 2:34.146 posted by KTM’s Mike
Alessi.
In turn, Alessi was almost a second faster than Kawasaki’s Timmy Ferry, who posted a
2:35.141, while Team Yamaha’s Grant Langston ended the day in fourth with a fastest
time of 2:36.445.
Coincidentally, Jeff Alessi joined his brother in the top five with a time of 2:36.601.
Kawasaki’s James Stewart once again elected to sit out Saturday qualifying, which he is
entitled to do since he is ranked in the top-10 overall in series standings, however, so
far, he is the only rider to take advantage of this rule.
If Carmichael is able to get his fifth win of the series tomorrow, it will leave him one win
short of 150 combined motocross and Supercross wins.
In the Lites division, series points leader Ryan Villopoto (pictured) looked fast and
smooth, and put his Monster Energy Kawasaki at the top of the time sheets with a time
of 2:35.113. Yamaha of Troy’s Jason Lawrence continues to impress and set the second
fastest time with a 02:35.244, while Sobe/Samsung/Honda’s Josh Grant was third with a
2:35.877.
Villopoto’s teammate Ben Townley set the fourth-fastest time with a 2:36.123, which he
posted during the first session. Unfortunately, shortly before the second practice,
Townley began having severe stomach pains and headed to the hospital for evaluation.

Nicky Hayden claims first 800 podium at Assen -ozzy go- motorcyclenews
Reigning world champion Nicky Hayden was ecstatic as he ended
a miserable 2007 in brilliant fashion in Assen today by claiming
his first podium in the new 800cc MotoGP era.
The American, who hadn’t even scored a top six finish in the
opening eight races, took a deserved third place behind dominant
duo Valentino Rossi (Fiat Yamaha) and Casey Stoner (Ducati).
Starting from way down in 13th place on the grid after a wet
qualifying session, Hayden made a brilliant start and was fifth
at the end of the first lap.
He claimed fourth from Marco Melandri on lap two and then hit
third when he got by pole-setter Chris Vermeulen (Rizla Suzuki)
on lap four.
He slipped back to fourth place on lap eight when a hard charging
Rossi passed him but he set himself up for his first podium since
he won the 2006 title in Valencia last October with a move by
fellow American John Hopkins on lap 14.
By that time Casey Stoner and Valentino Rossi had cut him adrift
but he comfortably pulled away from Repsol Honda team-mate
Dani Pedrosa (Reposol Honda) to secure his best result on the
factory RC212V.
Hayden had been confident of producing his best finish of the
season after he’d set the fastest time in this morning’s warm-up
session.
The 25-year-old though said his breakthrough result on Honda’s
struggling V4 was set up after his brilliant start.
He said: “On the warm-up lap I remember thinking this is by far
the best my bike has felt all year in any conditions and on the line
I remember thinking ‘fight like a dog today boy.’ “I got a really a
good start and got such a god start when I got to the hairpin I
almost relaxed too much and took a breath and Colin (Edwards)
came back by me. I needed a start. “That was the only choice I
had was to try and find a hole and do something. Even for a while
I thought we might be on for a better result but we’ll take this
one. “I want to say a big thanks to my team and all my guys who
have worked really hard for... click on ozzy go to the full story

A scintillating start from Australian Casey Stoner wasn't enough
to hold off five-time MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi in
the Dutch MotoGP at Assen.
Stoner had to settle for second after a rampaging Rossi stormed
from 11th on the grid to move within 21 points of championship
leader Stoner at the halfway point of the season.
The Australian look poised to claim yet another victory in this
memorable season for much of the race.
However, the windy conditions and skill of Rossi coupled to
relegate him to second place.
"We got an awesome start, went out to the front and felt quite
comfortable doing similar times to what we were doing in
practice, though not quite as fast because the wind was worse
today," Stoner explained after the race.
"I was getting pushed around in a few of the fast turns and had
a couple of front-end loses, so I wasn't willing to push the bike
in the braking points."
"I saw Valentino catching up, I saw him battling on the TV screens
around the track. He was chasing me down pretty hard, he had a
faster pace. I tried to up my own pace but once he came past I
was at my maximum."
Stoner said he was content with his performance and the
outcome.
"I felt great the entire race and I can't complain about the result
because we only lost five points in the championship and we've
only been off the podium twice this year," Stoner said.
The young Australian was full of praise for his team at the
halfway point of the season.
"Overall, I'm happy with the way the season's going. I didn't start
the year expecting to be leading the championship at this point,
and no matter what happens for the rest of the season we're
going to be very happy. I'm proud to be a Ducati man."
Yamaha Reaches 150th Premier-Class Milestone Whit Assen Victory
Assen, The Netherlands, Saturday, 30th June 2007
Yamaha's win with Valentino Rossi in the Dutch TT at Assen today
is cause for a double celebration for the Factory, as it is also its
150th win in the premier-class of World Championship motorcycle
racing. Yamaha Motor Company is only the second manufacturer
in the history of the sport to pass the milestone of 150 wins,
which it has achieved in 46 years since it began racing on the
international stage in 1961.
Yamaha's very first premier-class victory came with British rider
Chas Mortimer, in Barcelona at the final race of the 1972 series
aboard a 353cc twin-cylinder two-stroke Yamaha. Since then,
Yamaha has won premier-class Grands Prix in every season bar
two and has taken a total of eleven manufacturers' and twelve
riders' titles during the process.

World Champion Nicky Hayden fastest in warm-up at Assen
Repsol Honda's Nicky Hayden was fastest in this morning's MotoGP warm-up session
for today's Dutch Grand Prix at Assen.
In perfect weather conditions, the reigning world champion completed his fastest lap
in 1:38.297, 43 thousandths of a second faster than fellow American John Hopkins
on Rizla Suzuki.
Third and fourth fastest were the two Fiat Yamahas of Valentino Rossi and Colin Edwards
respectively, the two separated by 27 thousandths of a second with the Italian some
0.141 seconds slower than Hayden.
Dani Pedrosa was fifth fastest on the other works Honda, ahead of Alex Hofmann on
the Pramac d'Antin Ducati, Randy de Puniet on Kawasaki, and Carlos Checa on the
Cecchinello Honda.
The two works Marlboro Ducatis were only ninth and tenth fastest, with championship
leader Casey Stoner ahead of Loris Capirossi.
The Australian had a difficult session when he crashed while exiting the final corner with
six minutes to go. He managed to run back to the pits and rejoined the track with his
spare bike, with which he subsequently had an off-track excursion just as time ran out.
Pole position-sitter Chris Vermeulen could only manage 11th fastest with his Rizla
Suzuki, over eight tenths of a second slower than Hayden, while second row starter
Marco Melandri was a full 1.4 seconds behind the American in 16thplace.

Australia's wonder in the wet Chris Vermeulen produced the
goods in damp conditions once again, taking pole for the Dutch
MotoGP during the qualifying session at Assen ahead of Ducati
compatriot Casey Stoner.
In some typically rainy Dutch summer conditions, Rizla Suzuki's
Vermeulen produced the third pole position of his career with a
time of 1:48.555 to be 17 thousandths of a second ahead of
current MotoGP World Championship leader Stoner.
Vermeulen has become something of a wet weather specialist,
having won the rain-soaked French grand prix last month, but the
Australian is apparently keen to shed this tag and deliver some
top results in dry conditions.
As Vermeulen has previously won two Superbikes races at Assen,
the Dutch track is probably the best place to do this, but as the
circuit has been substantially modified since Vermeulen had his
wins, he will still have his work cut out for him to beat Stoner,
who is running hot after winning the last two MotoGPs in
spectacular style at Catalunya and Donington.
Once again, Stoner demonstrated the power and consistency of
his Ducati Desmodeci GP7, taking second position on the grid with
a time of 1:48.57 while impressive Kawasaiki rider Randy de
Puniet once again put aside the pain in his injured knee to claim
third through a time of 1:49.579.
Fourth position on the grid went to Honda Gresini's Marco Melandri
who put on a late burst to advance up the grid after languishing
behind the pace setters for much of the qualifying session, but the
Italian will be without Spanish team-mate Toni Elias who broke his
leg during an earlier practice session.
Vermeulen's Suzuki team-mate John Hopkins, who took pole at
this race in 2006, was fifth fastest during qualifying while
Australian MotoGP newcomer Anthony West produced another
impressive performance to take seventh with a time of 1:49.807
in just his second ride in the wet on Kawasaki's 800cc bike.

RC Going For Seventh Red Bud Win -ozzy go- transworldmx
Ricky Carmichael had a lot of pressure coming into the 2007 AMA
Toyota Motocross Championship presented by FMF. In spite of his
astounding career accomplishments RC risked finishing out his
career with a whimper. Instead he is continuing his assault on
the record books and going out with the loudest bang possible.
Showing the dedication and pride he’s had throughout his career,
Carmichael has completely dominated the season so far, winning
all four events leading up to the Monster Energy Kawasaki Red
Bud National Motocross presented by Concept Haulers on June
30-July 1 in Buchanan, Mich.
Carmichael is now set to race at the legendary Red Bud
motocross circuit for the final time. He enters the race having
won six straight nationals at the track. The race will mark the
final event for Carmichael before he goes on temporary
hiatus to focus on his upcoming stock car racing career.
Carmichael is slated to race Red Bud and then his possible final
appearance in the series at Millville, Minn., in August. The Red
Bud race will receive special same day coverage on SPEED.
Even Carmichael is pleasantly surprised by his undefeated start
this year.
“It’s been a really amazing year,” Carmichael told
amamotocross.com. “Especially with the way the motocross
series has gone so far. I didn’t expect to do as well as I did. I’m
just really happy with the way it’s all turning out. I still prepare as
much as I always have. The only thing I’m having a hard time
with is the motivation; knowing that you’re not going to be in
there for the championship. It’s hard to put in all that work for
just the weekend only.”
Carmichael is coming off his 100th-career AMA Motocross victory
at Budds Creek, Md., on June 17. A victory this weekend at Red
Bud could put the Makita Suzuki rider from Havana, Fla., just a
single win away from his stated goal of earning 150 combined
AMA Motocross/Supercross wins.
Monster Energy Suzuki’s James Stewart is ranked second to
Carmichael coming into Red Bud. Stewart scored his second moto
win of the year in the last round in Maryland, showing that he
indeed has the type of pace needed to run with Carmichael. Still,
the young Floridian was disappointed not to get the overall win.
“The second moto was really tough,” Stewart said after the Budds

Spies completes perfect MMP weekend -ozzy go- amasuperbike.com
Sunday’s AMA Superbike final at Miller Motorsports Park was a
dramatic affair with major championship implication shifts by
the lap. At the conclusion of the once-stopped final, Yoshimura
Suzuki’s Ben Spies stood atop the podium for the third time in two
days, completing a clean sweep of runaway victories from pole at
the Tooele, Utah venue this weekend. While the defending class
champion continued his stunning mid-season surge, taking
another key step towards a repeat crown, it was teammate Mat
Mladin who had the wildest day, ultimately escaping disaster and
keeping his title hopes very much alive with a heroic effort. The
Australian powered into the lead on the opening lap and built up
a small advantage while Spies worked his way around American
Honda’s Jake Zemke into second. Mladin boasted an early 1.667-
second gap but the Texan was whittling away at that lead,
decreasing it to 1.295 seconds to open lap 6. Moments later it
evaporated completely as Mladin suffered a horrific-looking Turn
1 highside. The six-time champ hit the ground hard and it initially
appeared as if may have been seriously injured. When the red
flag brought the proceedings to a halt, Mladin slowly got back up
to his feet and made his way back to pitlane in to prepare for the
restart. Forced to start from the back of the field on the machine
that he had just crashed (which was frantically repaired by his
crack crew), the Aussie stormed all the way into ninth on the
restart’s opening corner... click on ozzy go to the full story

Casey Stoner extends MotoGP lead with British Grand Prix win -ozzy go- stuff.co.nz
Australian Casey Stoner Has won a wet British Grand Prix at
Donington Park to chalk up his fifth victory in eight races and
move 26 points clear of Valentino Rossi in the MotoGP
championship.
Rossi, the former world champion, could not match the 21-year
-old Ducati rider's speed on the slippery Donington circuit and
finished off the podium in fourth place.
The Italian's Yamaha team mate Colin Edwards was second,
11.768 seconds behind Stoner, with Australian Chris Vermeulen
third for Suzuki.
"I didn't really know what to expect at the start of the race,
whether it was going to bucket down after we started and really
soak the track or actually dry out like it did," said Stoner, who
made his grand prix debut at Donington as a 125cc rider in 2001.
"So it was a bit of a gamble, I suppose," he said of his tyre
choice. "Then about half way through it started to really dry out
and the bike started to spin a lot so I was just trying to smooth
everything down so we didn't destroy the tyre before the end of
the race. That was my biggest fear."
Texan Edwards had started on pole position and Stoner's success
maintained a season-long jinx for any rider starting in the top
slot, with the last winner from pole dating back to Japan last
september.
Stoner, now on 165 points to Rossi's 139, recovered from a poor
start that pushed him down to seventh at the end of the first lap
at a circuit he had denounced earlier in the week as far too
slippery.
The Australian, who hails from Kurri Kurri, New South Wales,
slotted into second place after five of the 30 laps however and
took the lead on the 16th when Edwards, the former World
Superbike champion who has yet to win a MotoGP race, ran wide.
"I came into the chicane and braked and it kind of locked up a
little bit," said the Texan... click on ozzy go to the full story

HEAD IN THE CLOUDS -ozzy go- The Sydney Morning Herarld
From Port Kembla electrician to Australia's very own Evel Knievel,
Robbie Maddison is quickly making his mark in freestyle motocross,
Winsor Dobbin writes.
IT WAS a good steady job, working as an electrician at the Port Kembla steelworks.
But Robbie Maddison wanted more. As he plied his trade, his mind wandered back to
when he was bumping bars with Chad Reed and Anthony Gobert in junior motocross
events. In his head he was doing aerial stunts on his motorbike, performing death-
defying jumps. He was Evel Knievel.
"Being an electrician was driving me insane," he says. So he quit.
Three years on, Maddison is one of the top five freestyle motocross (FMX) riders
in the world. He has a house in Southern California, stars regularly on US network
television and is treated like a movie star wherever he goes.
Except in Australia, where he's just one of the boys when he gets together with
his mates from Kiama or returns to his house at Oak Flats.
Extreme sports are big business. Events like FMX and skateboarding have built
huge fan bases without permeating the consciousness of fans of mainstream sports.
The X-Games in Los Angeles, the Red Bull X-Fighters series and the Dew Action
Sports Tour are box-office smashes - and Maddison, 25, is right in the thick of it.
If it's Sunday, it must be Moscow, or Dublin, or Mexico City, or Madrid. But it hasn't
been an easy road for Maddison, who might just be the toughest (and maddest)
sportsman Australia has produced for some time.
He's broken his neck, had three seizures, punctured both lungs, broken his
collarbone four times and snapped his wrist four times in his quest to be the
best freestyle motocross rider in the world... click on ozzy go to the full story
Ricky Hatton (43-0) retains crown with knockout of Jose Luis Castillo -ozzy go-
The acclaim for Ricky Hatton’s achievement in stopping one of
the most efficient body punchers of the modern era quickly and
efficiently, with a perfect sickener to the liver of Jose Luis Castillo,
ought to be chimed out for some time.
You could almost feel the crunch of ribs from row 10. Anything
less than wholehearted recognition, and justice to a great British
sportsman will not have been fairly given out.
The detractors will say Castillo is shot as a fighter, has had too
many ring wars, but boxing is no game.
It is a sport in which you do not get paid extra-time, and Hatton
was in the mood to clock off early.
In doing so, he has propelled himself into other potential
superfights, on Home Box Office, the American cable giants.
Hatton had not prepared to fail in this fight, dominating from the
opening bell, before Castillo
let loose a couple of low blows, for
which he was eventually deducted a point.
"There’s only one Ricky Hatton", chanted over 10,000 British fans,
accompanied by a brass band, horns and drums.
This was England versus Mexico, northern grit versus machismo,
and now Hatton's fans can celebrate.
Indeed, they have never witnessed him lose in 43 professional
fights, and can look forward to even greater nights ahead.
If the big names, like Floyd Mayweather, continue to show a lack
of interest, it is likely that they have decided Hatton is best avoided.
Hatton, clearly, is more motivated the harder opponent. This
fight, and the light-welterweight title at home two years ago
against Kostya Tszyu, have clearly been Hatton's defining fights
to date.
"I think tonight was a bit more of my best," Hatton said. "I don't
think there was the excitement in my last two fights as there was
tonight."
Hatton ended Castillo with a left hook to the body midway through
the fourth round. Castillo took a step and then spun around, and
went down to one knee, where he took the count from referee
Joe Cortez without getting to his feet.
Castillo simply could not breathe. In this desert city where
punters are looking for the one hit to bring them their fortune,
Hatton's singular blow has made the world his oyster.
Talkative, charismatic - admired by other sportsmen like Wayne
Rooney, who carried Hatton's belt into the ring, for which Hatton
wore a blue sombrero and ponches, and remains one of the
greatest British sporting role models to compete abroad.
Hatton, who earned a reported $2.5 million US dollars,
commented after the fight: "I'm sorry I beat one of your heroes
tonight, but hopefully his fans can become my fans.” Britain - and
Mexico - now expect.
